Thanksgiving turkeys are Selket's project. The turkey "poults" are purchased from hatcheries in Iowa or Wisconsin as day-old poults.
The poults receive a non-medicated game bird starter ration for the first month. After that they are gradually switched over to a high protein custom blend of feed made from corn, soybean meal, and a vitamin blend. They also eat grass, clover, and other plants in their pen. They are particularly fond of thistles.
Turkeys take about 3 and 1/2 months to reach a 12- to 18-lb. processed weight, which is the range of what most people want for Thanksgiving. The turkeys are inspected, processed, and frozen at Nelson-Shine Produce Company in Brainerd, MN. Selket takes orders throughout the summer and we arrange pick-up dates in early and mid-November.
