The Turkeys
Thanksgiving turkeys are a tradition for our farm. The turkey "poults" are purchased from a Sunnyside Hatchery in Wisconsin as day-old poults. The poults receive a non-medicated game bird starter ration for the first month. After that they are gradually switched over to a high protein custom blend of feed made from corn, soybean meal, and a vitamin blend. They also eat grass, clover, and other plants in their pen. They are particularly fond of thistles. Turkeys take about 3 and 1/2 months to reach a 12- to 18-lb. processed weight, which is the range of what most people want for Thanksgiving. The turkeys are inspected, processed, and frozen at Lake Haven Meats in Sturgeon Lake, MN. We take orders throughout the summer and arrange pick-up dates in mid-November. |
